2007 Heisman Trophy Candidates

Like any year, the 2007 football season presents many Heisman Trophy candidates who will be placed under the media microscope. Which Heisman Trophy candidate will emerge and outclass the others? Throughout the season we will provide
updates on the Heisman Trophy candidates until one player brings the bronze trophy home.

This year's Heisman race should be just as exciting as ever. There are no clear favorites among the candidates and there are many Heisman hopefuls choose from. However, with the end of the season looming, we have trimmed the fat and selected our top 3 favorites. Tim Tebow is not getting as much credit because Florida has 3 losses while Oregon and Dennis Dixon are staring at a potential BCS championship birth. I don't think anyone can argue that Tim Tebow, who was a run only QB last year for Florida coach Urban Meyer, has turned into one of the most polished passers in the NCAA. He's still just a sophmore, but he leads the country in QB rating, and he leads Dixon in every offensive category as well. He's also set rushing records for the Gators and is easily the engine that makes them move.

The Heisman Trophy is supposed to go to the most outstanding player in college football. While Dixon has been very valuable, there is little doubt in my mind that Tim Tebow is the most outstanding player in college football. There is nobody who is more talented, valuable, and outstanding in the country right now. West Virginia's quarterback, Pat White, widely recognized as probably the nation's best running QB has 803 yards for 10 TD's. Compare that to 718 yards and 19 TD's for Tebow. And if you think 46 total TD's for Graham Harrell of Texas Tech is a lot, you're right. Most people will say that it is because he plays in a system. Regardless of that, compare it to Tim Tebow's combined 42 TD's in the SEC. Nobody is more outstanding than Tebow, and it will be a shame if he doesn't win this award because he's a sophmore or because of 3 tough losses. The award is for the most outstanding player, not the one with the best record. I hope the voters get this one right.

Heisman Trophy Recipe: What are the ingredients Heisman voters look for?

Upperclassmen:
In the past it has been essential that the Heisman champ be a junior or senior. An underclassmen has never won the award.

BCS Conference:
Not since Ty Demeter won the Heisman at BYU in 1990 has a Heisman Trophy winner come from a school that's not currently in a BCS conference. BCS conference schools gain the weekly spotlight by dominating the TV networks and the highlight shows

The Right Position:
The last two decades have only produced three Heisman winners that weren't positioned as a QB or RB. Tim Brown 1987, Desmond Howard 1991 and Charles Woodson 1997 broke the mold.

A National Title Contender:
It's a trend that's gaining momentum as recent winners (Troy Smith, Reggie Bush, Matt Leinart and Jason White) had their teams positioned for a national title game appearance when the Heisman voting was conducted in early December

Buzz and More Buzz:
Without the Hype going into the season, it's nearly impossible for a player to gain the voters attention: With player specific promotional websites and aggressive marketing campaigns launched by a Heisman candidates particular school, it's essential to start the season with "Heisman Hype" to match "Heisman Talent!"
