2007 NCAA Football Rankings

The voters, the bowls, the ticket sellers, I'm betting that everyone will want LSU to play Oklahoma for the national title because of their major markets. Two high profile schools playing for all the glory. But as it stands, we could possibly see Oregon play Kansas for the national title. It would probably be a disaster for the BCS championship game because those two teams just are not as popular, and it will be more difficult to sell tickets.

That's what makes the BCS what it is, instead of a playoff where things are settled on the field, we just pick the 2 teams with the best records basically. I would still contend that Florida is a top 5 team, regardless of their 3 losses. In a playoff system, a lot of people would pick them because they are still a great team. The BCS is never fully accurate, LSU has played 6 top 20 teams, while Kansas has played just 1 team that was ranked #24, yet they are both considered pretty equal because LSU lost a close game. The BCS can't measure talent, or schemes, or matchups, or game planning.

I am still proposing my 8 team playoff. Using the BCS rankings for the 8 teams that would have received bowl bids. 6 conference winners and 2 at large. Play the first 4 games as the bowls, the Orange, Fiesta, Sugar and Rose. Then the 2 follow up games at a neutral site, likely an NFL stadium in the "home" team's state. Then the championship game will be back at one of the four bowls, rotating each year for the championship game of course. This way, we still get the 4 bowl games, and the highest ranked team makes more money for it's state by playing 1 game at an NFL stadium before the championship game. There are bowl games played all the way up until the first weeks in January, so I don't understand why it would be a problem. The BCS is here to stay, but if Oregon plays Kansas for the national championship, there will probably be a lot of people complaining, so that's what I'm hoping for, even though I'm a hardcore LSU fan. I'm a bigger BCS hater, even with my team ranked #1 again.

BCS Bowl Projections
Rose Bowl (Big 10 vs. Pac 10): Ohio State Buckeyes vs. Arizona State Sun Devils
Fiesta Bowl (Big 12 vs. At Large): Oklahoma Sooners vs. Hawaii Warriors (Remember last year?)
Sugar Bowl (SEC vs. At Large): Missouri Tigers vs. Tennessee Volunteers
Orange Bowl (Big East vs. ACC): West Virginia Mountaineers vs. Virginia Tech Hokies
BCS Championship (#1 vs. #2): LSU Tigers vs. Oregon Ducks

1.
LSU Tigers 9-1
The Tigers only loss came on the road in triple overtime to a Kentucky team that was playing great football at the time. They have played 6 top 20 teams, 3 of which were top 12. It says a lot about the SEC, it says even more about the Tigers. They close with Arkansas and then the SEC championship game against either Tennessee or Georgia. (Another top 20 team) They will have played 7 of their 13 games against ranked opponents. They deserve to play for the title if they win out, hands down.

2.
Oregon Ducks 8-1
The Ducks took down powerhouse Michigan, then powerhouse USC, then undefeated Arizona State. Their only blemish is against a tough Cal team who was ranked #6, which some people had picked to win their conference. The Ducks are playing great football and have some quality wins. Their closing schedule is weak though. They will have to worry about the Big 12 championship if Oklahoma plays Kansas. Whoever wins will have a quality win which may propel them past Oregon in the final week.

3.
Kansas 10-0
Kansas has been interesting this year. I don't think we know how good they really are yet, but they are undefeated in a major conference, and that has to be worth something. They have outscored opponents 348-72 at home, but only 111-77 on the road. Their only ranked opponent was #24 Kansas State, which they won by only 6 points. They close with #6 Missouri though, and then would likely play Oklahoma in the conference championship game. If they win those 2 games, they should leapfrog Oregon at #2.

4.
Oklahoma Sooners 9-1
Oklahoma holds it's own destiny. Leading the Big 12 South heading into the final weeks. Their only loss came to Colorado on the road by 3 points. A tough loss, but voters don't always seem to care about a loss to an unranked team if they are in your conference. If they win out, they will get Kansas in the Big 12 championship. Unless Missouri beats Kansas, which is probably bad for Oklahoma. They've already beaten Missouri this year, so another win won't be as attractive. Beating undefeated Kansas, will be.

5.
West Virginia Mountaineers 8-1
West Virginia has been solid this year, only losing to South Florida who eventually ended up at #2 for a week. It was the only game where the Mountaineers didn't score at least 30 points. (13) The Big East hasn't been as attractive this year as we thought, but that doesn't mean that there aren't good teams here. They have beaten Rutgers and Louisville, with UConn and Cincinnati still to play, who have both been tough this year. They probably win the Big East, but they aren't in the running for a championship.

6.
Ohio State Buckeyes 10-1
Ohio State had the winning catch and dropped it. They were set to run the table, win out and play for a championship. If they had lost this game earlier in the year, they would have had time to move back up to the top like LSU did, but this is too late. They don't have enough time to prove themselves again with only Michigan left to play this year. They can still claim the Big Ten though, and a likely Rose Bowl birth if they can close out Michigan next weekend.

7.
Missouri 9-1
Missouri has been good this year, but not good enough to earn the respect of voters like Oklahoma has. Mizzou's only loss was to the #4 Sooners, while the Sooners lost to unranked Colorado. It's another reason that we would all love to see a playoff. But we know the truth, it's about money. Missouri has an outside shot at a title though if the close by beating Kansas and then avenging their loss to Oklahoma in the Big 12 championship game. But even still, I think the voters would put in LSU and Oregon.

8.
Arizona State University 9-1
ASU ran their record up to 8-0 before being taken down by the Oregon Ducks. They get USC next, so we will see who the second best team in the PAC-10 is when they square off next weekend. It's unlikely that they will win the PAC-10 with Oregon's soft schedule, but if the Ducks go to play for the BCS title, ASU may end up in the Rose Bowl with Ohio State. If the Sun Devils manage to end their year by taking out USC and winning the Rose Bowl against the Buckeye's they'll be very happy.

9.
Georgia Bulldogs 8-2
Georgia has been on fire lately. Head coach Mark Richt has been flipping things upside down with some new and uncharacteristic activities. Such as excessive celebrating against Florida or their new black jerseys. They probably won't win the SEC, but they will be a tough opponent for whoever they play in the post season. With a young quarterback and some fresh talent coming in, Georgia looks to be a challenger for an SEC title next year.

10.
Florida Gators 7-3
The best team on this list. The Gators are still the most impressive team in the country and have the ability to win on both sides of the ball. They work hard and are extremely talented. With Heisman hopeful, Tim Tebow, healthy and ready to go, they can beat anyone. Unfortunately, they're young, and Tebow has been a little banged up. Combine that with their schedule in the SEC and you get 3 losses. You go play LSU, Auburn, South Carolina, Tennessee, Georgia, and Kentucky and see what happens.
