Since its founding in 1819, UC has been the source of many discoveries creating positive change for society, including co-op education, the oral polio vaccine, the first electronic organ, the first safe anti-knock gasoline, and the first antihistamine.

Each year, this public, comprehensive university graduates 5,000 students, adding to more than 200,000 living alumni around the world. UC is the largest employer in the Cincinnati region, with an economic impact of more than $3 billion.

Longfellow called Cincinnati the “Queen City of the West.” Winston Churchill called it “America’s most beautiful inland city.” Today, Cincinnati continues to offer the resources of a major city -- strong businesses, major league sports, world-class arts. It also has the advantages of a small town -- green hills, distinctive neighborhoods, low cost of living, a compact downtown and friendly people.

The Greater Cincinnati region is made up of 13 counties in three states: Ohio, Kentucky, and Indiana. The region is bisected by the Ohio River, one of the major waterways of North America. Cincinnati is home to almost 2 million people who enjoy a cost of living that is more than four points below the national index (Source: AACRA cost of living index for First Quarter 2004).

As a livable city, Cincinnati is ranked 11th -- the top 3% of metro areas -- in the Special Millennium Edition of Places Rated Almanac. Fortune magazine ranks Cincinnati in the top 10 as a great place to live and work.
